Sri Lanka is an island in the Indian Ocean south of India and is organized as a socialist democratic republic. The country has been riven by a civil war which arose in 1983 and ended in 2009 in which the Sri Lankan government and the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) clashed.
